Itinerary and highlights
Mount Vernon is the former residence and plantation of George Washington, one of the Founding Fathers, commander of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War and the first president of the United States, and his wife, Martha. An American landmark, the property is on the banks of the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, approximately 15 miles south of Washington, D.C.
A bustling historic district along the Potomac, Old Town is marked by 18th-century pavement streets and remains. George Washington slept in Gadsby’s Tavern, one of the many small museums in the area. Another is the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary, opened in 1783. Indie boutiques and gastronomic spots line up on King Street, and there are outdoor restaurants near the river. The Saturday farmers market has been operating for 260 years.
The George Washington Masonic National Memorial (Alexandria, Virginia) is a museum designed to educate the world about George Washington: the man and the Mason.
Gadsby’s Tavern has served exquisite meals since 1770. Elegant colonial dining rooms from the George Washington era.
A place of worship for prominent historians, including Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross and George Washington, Christ Church remains an active Episcopal Church and continues to hold weekly cults.
